Disability Conference Held 27-29 November 2018

This years Disabled Members Conference was held at the Brighton Centre. There was a political theme with workshops covering

·         Brexit and disabled people’s rights

·         Disabled people standing for political office

·         Campaigning against PIP and Universal Credit

·         Bargaining for disability rights in the workplace

It was reassuring to see hidden disabilities featuring strongly throughout the motions such as ‘Neurodiversity’ and ‘Breaking down barriers for Neurodiverse Women’, ‘Mental Health First Aid’, ‘ADHD’, ‘Recruiting and retaining Deaf workers’, and the impact of Hotdesking on our disabled members.

Emma Lewell-Buck MP, Shadow Minister for Children and Families gave a motivational speech sharing her passion for equality and her campaigns to ensure children have the best options in life.  She also described the challenges she faced herself when she disclosed her dyslexia and dyspraxia and how she fought the stigma in order to succeed in her role.

It was amazing to experience so much passion in support of those affected either directly or indirectly by disabilities in just one room.  As the saying goes “there’s strength in numbers” and together we can continue to fight for a fair deal for our disabled members.
